Book Review: The Teacher by Katerina Diamond

Title: The Teacher

You've only got to look at the cover for The Teacher for your curiosity to be peaked so once you start, you know you've just got to finish this.

As the book says, this really isn't for the faint-hearted, but if anything that made me want to read this more. Once I began, I was consumed with this need to find out what package the head teacher received. However one scene nearly had me stopping entirely and putting the book down. It was a seriously intense scene, but the fact that it got to me so much just tells you how brilliant a writer Katerina is. And I was too desperate to discover the reason behind what was happening, so I got my head in gear and continued to read. Katerina had well and truly got my attention that was for sure.

I was surprised to see this was a multi-narrative book, but I think it's deliberately set up to confuse you. Although I did guess something right, there was a lot of other twists in the book that had me shocked and not see coming at all. Katerina is great at really drawing her reader in and creating a dramatic and tense atmosphere and she is of course VERY good at adding in the gruesome.

The only slight bugbear that I had with this was that the storytelling got a little disjointed towards the end. I felt it detracted from the main story and left me slightly confused as thought I had missed a bit. However this didn't last too long and then we were back on track.

The Teacher definitely separates itself from a lot of other thrillers currently out there. I was constantly anxious as to what was coming for us next. So reiterating the health warning that comes with this, this is not for the squeamish (that's me included) but if you can get over the first shuddering scene, then carry on, you definitely won't regret it.

I genuinely want to read more from Katerina and am looking forward to what she has in store for us next.
