Book Review: Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Uprooted was one of my 2015 books that I was desperate to pick up, but because of it's size and weight (was commuting at the time), I kept putting it off. However over Christmas I finally decided to get stuck in. This was one of those books that had been fairly hyped up, so I did go in with quite high expectations. 
I had heard of Uprooted described as Disney for adults, so being a big fan of Disney, this had me very excited. Every ten years the Dragon, as he is described, who rules over her village, takes a girl away to live with him as a price for protecting them against the evils of the Wild Wood. With the next choosing fast approaching, everyone thinks the Dragon will take the beautiful Kasia, but they could not be more wrong.
I am a big fan of anything with sorcery and fantasy when it comes to books and Uprooted really did deliver on this part. Although it did not quite live up to my hype expectations, I still thought this was a pretty epic fantasy and how other myths and fairytales have been crafted into the story, but with their own spin on them. 
The most fascinating thing about this story had to be the Wild Wood, or the evilness that it was and the fight against it. The twist at the end was one that I did not see coming and it really got me thinking. I won't say what it is as it will give too much away, but I thought it was really well done and tied everything up nicely.
This is one of those books that will truly transport you to another world. It's magical, daring and surprisingly a book to get you thinking.
I actually think that Uprooted would work really well as a film. Although they would have to obviously cut a lot out, there is so much that would keep you gripped throughout and I would love to see how this would be interpreted on the big screen.
Not what I was expecting at all, but a magical read all the same which you can really get your teeth into.
