How many lifetimes would you travel to find a love that lasts forever?
When single career girl Jo-Jo steps onto a zebra crossing and gets hit by a car, she awakes to find herself in 1963. The fashion, the music, her job, even her romantic life: everything is different. And then it happens three more times, and Jo-Jo finds herself living a completely new life in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. The only people she can rely on are Harry and Ellie, two companions from 2013, and George, the owner of a second-hand record store.
If she's ever to return from her travels, Jo-Jo must work out why she's jumping through time like this. And if she does make it back, will her old life ever be the same again?
The following review is from Emma Louise:
I was very fortunate to be sent an advanced copy of Step Back In Time from Ali’s publication house. The copy was sent with the original front cover which is gorgeous and since then, it’s changed. Never the less, they’re both as beautiful as one another.
This is the first novel of Ali’s which I’ve read and it certainly won’t be the last. The narrative is extremely gripping and Jo-Jo, the main character is highly entertaining. She’s one of those characters who you would love to have as a friend.
Even though the plot is highly unrealistic, Ali’s writing style and wonderful characters make it work. However, I’ll be avoiding zebra crossings and white cars from now on! It’s extremely clear that a lot of research has gone into this novel. The passion for fashion runs throughout the narrative and the theme of music is a wonderful addition.
Whilst I was reading the novel, I couldn’t help but recall the Zac Efron film, 17 Again, which is a lot like this narrative. The main character must have a purpose in order to return to their normal time zone. I would have quite happily gone back to the 50’s to be an extra in Grease!
I really enjoyed Step Back In Time and managed to read it within a single day. I can’t wait for Ali’s next novel, no doubt it’ll just be as brilliant as this one!
