Rae Rivers author of The Keepers: Archer Interview feature

I was really happy to have the lovely Rae Rivers stop my blog to tell us about her novel The Keepers: Archer and she has some really great advice for aspiring authors.

1. The Keepers: Archer is your first novel. What was it that inspired you to write?

I’ve always loved reading and writing and hand wrote my first book at the age of twelve years old.  I loved the process so much and it soon became a regular hobby that over time grew into a daily habit.  Now I spend a large part of my day with characters, plot lines, and hot romance bouncing around in my head!   To be able to write my characters’ stories has been wonderful!

2. I love the characters in the story, particularly Archer! Who was your favourite character to write?

I loved Archer as he’s so intense, sexy, and so incredibly protective of Sienna.  I had a lot of fun with Declan too as he’s the more reckless brother and has absolutely no filter when speaking his mind.  When writing, I often had to reel him in and tell him to behave himself!  The brotherly bond and banter between them was lots of fun to play with.  I’m currently underway with Declan’s story which has been interesting as he’s so different to Archer.

3. I have never come across the idea of witches and their keepers before. How did you come up with this idea?

I’ve mostly stuck to reading and writing romantic suspense books until one day, out of the blue, after a discussion with a friend about Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, a witch came to mind.  I quickly realized that she came with a protective alpha male which soon developed into three – her Keepers.  They are her allies in maintaining the balance of nature, her fierce protectors -  and because of this, they have a magical connection with her.  It’s a very special bond and unique connection and I loved working with this element of the story.

4. The Keepers is a trilogy (so excited for the next book!) What made you decide to write a trilogy?

I’m thrilled that you’re excited for the next book in the series!  I had never really considered writing a trilogy before – especially a Paranormal Romance.  But once the Keepers came to mind, I realized that each brother had his own story to tell.   Although romance forms the main thread for the entire trilogy, there’s so much more to the series  – love, heartache, loss, friendship, family, magic, loyalty, duty and honour.  Although each book can be read separately, there’s an exciting underlying story carried throughout the trilogy and readers will see an exciting conclusion in book three – Ethan.

5.  What was the most fun part of writing your book?

Gosh, there were several fun aspects!  I loved the relationship between Archer and Sienna – so intense and sexy.  I also loved the relationship between Sienna and her Keepers as the brothers are so different.  I enjoyed working on the protective bond they share as well as the magic system in the book.  This was very different for me and it was fun to develop a unique mythology and magic system that was real to Sienna and her Keepers.  Through them, I got to do some really cool things!

6. Do you have a specific writing style?

I really am a mixture of a forward planner and write off the seat of your pants kind of author.  I need to have a vague indication of where my story is headed but once I start writing, the characters seem to drive the story.  When writing a scene that contains a lot of dialogue, I tend to just write the dialogue without the beats or dialogue tags.  This may sound odd but in a scene where it’s Sienna and all her Keepers, they tend to “speak” so fast that I struggle to keep up with them!  It helps to jot down their conversation first and then go back and flush out the rest.

7. Could you tell me who your favourite author is?

This is always hard to answer as I enjoy so many authors’ books that I find it difficult to pin a favourite.  I read a variety of authors across the genres (although I don’t like horror or creepy stories) but romance books are still my firm favourite read!

8. Do you have any tips for aspiring authors?

Writing is hard work, as is getting published, but there are so many opportunities available to authors today. You can’t submit what you haven’t written so get writing, keep writing, and keep submitting! Also, social media is a wonderful way to reach other authors, publishers, and to connect with readers.

9. What book are you reading at the moment?

I’m trying to catch up with titles written by the other authors at Harper Impulse so at the moment it’s Waking Up In Vegas by Romy Sommer.  Next on my list is Aimee Duffy’s Sinfully Summer.

10. The next book in the trilogy is focused on the character of Declan, can you give us a hint as when it will be out?

I’m currently underway with this so it should be available in Winter 2013.
