Followers by Megan Angelo Blog Tour

The synsopsis for Followers instantly piqued my interest when I read it as we are in a day and age where our success is largely determined by the amount of followers we have. Nearly everyone wants to be insta famous and some will go to more extreme lengths than others to get there....

REVIEW

Followers is split between present day and 2051. Present day Orla wants to make it big in the literary world, but she's stuck in a job that obsesses over celebrities and can't see a way of moving forward. That is until her roommate Floss moves in and she comes up with a sure-fire way to make them the A-listers they want to be, no matter what it takes. Fast forward to 2051 and Marlow has never known anything but the spotlight - her every move broadcasted to the world. The network choose what she wears, who shes marries and what she does each day. Upon discovering a shattering secret, Marlow finally gets up the courage to run away. And now she must uncover the truth before it's too late.

This was actually way more eye opening than I expected it to be. It shows the dark realities of being addicted to technology and the way that we obsess over celebrities and influencers and the instant gratification of receiving 'likes' and follows' - I know I am guilty of this one. It is such a timely debut that even brings into question how much social media and the internet has effected us, our friendships, our family dynamics and relationships. Who's there to judge when a line has been crossed and who is accountable for what we see? Followers gives us those alternative outcomes...

The characters in this were so vivid and at times pretty electrifying. I can't put my finger on it exactly I could not get them out of my head. Between Orla and Marlow and of course the storyline, this really got me thinking about my internet usage and what it is that pulls me to social media all the time.

Timely, intense and incredibly thought provoking - Followers will stay with me for a long long time.
