I have always had a side interest in Greek Mythology as it is always something that has fascinated me, so when Emily Hauser released her first book in The Golden Apple trilogy, For the Most Beautiful, an interest was sparked. Now on her final book For the Immortal, I am sad to see this trilogy come to an end.
REVIEW
I will quickly mention that you do not need to read the first two books in this trilogy to enjoy For the Immortal, although you will still definitely want to read them as they are fantastic reads.
In For the Immortal, Emily recreates this well known tale by putting the Amazon queen, Hippolyta and Admete daughter of the Kind of Eurytheus and friend to Hercules, two incredibly fierce and brave women who don't get the credit they are due in the original story.
These two women fascinated me, particularly Hippolyta who is a very brave warrior but also with a kindness in her heart that other warriors to not have. Admete is a skilled healer and determined to make her brother better, so she sets off to see the Amazons to find a cure. Both women have different stories but they both face the same challenge, being women in a very male-dominated world. It was very hard to read at times and my view of the 'heroes' completely changed. These women are the real heroines.
As in For the Most Beautiful, Emily makes another Greek legend come to life. Emily has a beautiful way with words that could not be more perfect. Her writing is what makes this story the gem that it is. She has the ability to evoke your senses and emotions whilst reading and make you feel you are right there in amongst the characters in this colourful and beautiful landscape. You can tell from the writing how much research and attention to detail has gone in this and it even helps with appendices to tell you who the characters are, places and the context of the story. This is very helpful to readers who are familiar with the story and those who aren't.
Once again this was was enthralling, enchanting and magical all at the same time. I became utterly fascinated with this story and it sparked my love for Greek mythology all over again. I really hope Emily decides to write more at a future date as The Golden Apple Triology have been stories seriously lacking in the book world.
