Tanya Byron, a leading Clinical Psychologist and academic, joins internationally renowned author Emma Donoghue in a video conversation full of refreshing and challenging perspectives.
In her latest novel, Frog Music, based on real events, Emma challenges the pervasive images and rhetoric of motherhood that we are all so accustomed to, instead offering us a much more powerful, honest account that, although set in 1876, will resonate with mothers today.
Tanya, as a clinical psychologist, has worked with children for over 25 years and has seen first-hand the harrowing effects trauma can have. However, she has also seen how, with well-timed and appropriate clinical care, these children can go on to lead stable, happy lives. She challenges the predominant cultural stigmas around teens which sees young people criminalised, abandoned and written off. In The Skeleton Cupboard she shares some of these remarkable stories and talks about how her patients have inspired and motivated her.
Watch this poignant interview to see what shapes and inspires the two authors and learn more about what motivates them to be able to explore these uncomfortable and often dark human characteristics.
