Interview with Julie Cohen
1. Please could you briefly describe what Dear Thing is about?
It’s the story of Claire and Ben, a happily-married couple who can’t have the baby they so desperately want. So their friend Romily offers to be a surrogate mother for them. But being pregnant with Ben’s baby stirs up all sorts of unexpected feelings in her.
2. What was the inspiration for Dear Thing?
I, and many of my friends, have struggled with infertility and miscarriage. I wanted to write about some of these emotions in my book, because they’re important and heartbreaking, and so many people suffer them.
Poignant, funny, thought-provoking.
4.What is the best thing about being a writer?
Spending lots and lots of time with the imaginary people in your head. And being able to work in your pyjamas.
5. Where is your favourite place to write?
I usually write in the attic of our house, where I can pull up the ladder and type away to my heart’s content. But I also love writing at my parents’ cottage at Roxbury Pond in Maine, USA, late at night when there’s no internet connection and no noise other than the peepers and the waves on the beach.
6. Who is your favourite author?
That is a ridiculously difficult question because there are so many. My favourite author this afternoon is Georgette Heyer, because I’m rereading Cotillion for the third time and loving it as much as I did the first time. But if you ask me tomorrow I’ll probably choose someone different!
7. What book (s) have you got planned next?
My next book, WHERE LOVE LIES, is out in hardback in July. It’s the story of a happily-married woman who suddenly experiences a scent that plunges her into memories of a tumultuous, intense affair she had ten years before, before she met her husband.
I’m working on the next book after that now, but I can’t quite tell you what it’s about yet.
8. Where can others connect with you?
My website is www.julie-cohen.com, I’m on Facebook on www.facebook.com/julie.cohen.books and I’m on Twitter far too much as @julie_cohen.
